Yom Kipur -Day of Treason 1973 Version 2.0
Scenario for Microprose CIV II, Multiplayer Gold Edition
Written & Designed by Alexandre Ostrowiecki (Nani) from Brazil - 1999

Inicial Words
-------------
Hi, my name is Alexandre Ostrowiecki, but people call me Nani. I was born in Brazil and have
lived here all my life, but, besides being brazilian, my heart is also jewish and israeli. This
is why I set about building scenarios on israeli history. My main intention is that, after playing
my scenarios, people will have learned a little more about Israels short history and understood a
little bit more the conflict in the region. To write history is a partial activity. We can claim
to be absolutely neutral, but even the way you tell things, the facts you choose to expose and
others aspects will eventualy be tendentious and point to a determined historical view. This must
be said especially about the arab-israeli conflict, which still arouses passions in our days. And,
be sure about it, designing CIV II scenarios is writing history. So, I tried to do it with the
utmost caution and incorporating aspects from both sides of the conflict. I collected information
from my trips to Israel and Egypt and from the excelent books "Israel", by Martin Gilbert and "The
October War" by the Egyptian Marshall El-Gamasy. I want to build some scenarios also on brazilian
history, a country which has many interesting moments. I hope to acomplish this as soon as I
finish the series on Israel. Meanwhile, enjoy yourselves and I really hope that you will help
me by sending your comments, sugestions and politicaly boiling swearings. Sincerelly,

                                                              Nani

Whats special about the scenario?
----------------------------------

NAME OF THE SCENARIO

In 1973, Israel was surprise attacked by the combined armies of Egypt and Syria. The subsequent
fighting was called by the israelis and the world the "Yom Kipur War".
On the other hand, the arabs call it the "October War", because it was in this month and, for
them, the jewish holyday of Yom Kipur means nothing.

So, there are three recommended possibilities of playing the scenario:
- If you wish to play as the Israelis, load the "Yom Kipur War" scenario
- If you wish to play as the Arabs, load the "October War" scenario
- If you wish to play as both, in multiplayer load the "2players" scenario
In the three cases, the scenario is the same, but I made some adaptations in order to be more
challenging for the human player.

WEAPONS MARKET

This is one of the most inovative things about the scenario. I believe no other scenario
possesses this feature (correct me if Im wrong). Whatever the CIV you play with (Israel or
United Arab Republic) you will have a special possibility. In the corner of the map, isolated
from the rest, youll have a "Purchaser" unit surounded by zounds of barbarians. Your single
purchaser will be facing dozens of aircraft, tanks, ships and missiles. But dont wory. None
of these units can move. They also have a defense factor 0. So, whats the trick? Your purchaser
has 3 movement point. He can attack and kill up to 3 barbarians per turn. The fact is that,
when you kill a barbarian unit, a new one, ready for use, will apear for you, after you have your
money decreased, of course. This works as the international arms market. Provided you have the
cash, you can buy up to 3 units per turn and have them instantly delivered. Simply choose what
unit you need most and attack the barbarian correspondent.

TECNOLOGY

In Yom Kipur, Day of Treason, theres no technology in the conventional term. When you
research something new, it wont allow you to build new units or constructions. In the scenario,
Im using technology to trigger events. For instance:

Israelis
American Support -> American Airlift => When this is researched, the american troops on israeli
airports are evacuated and Israel begins receiving large amounts of equipment every turn.

Invade Lebanon / Attack Jordan => For practical reasons, Israel starts allied with Jordan and
Lebanon. But if you want to declare war on them, simply research one of these techs.

Arabs
Jordans Alliance => With this tech, you can convince Jordan to join the arab cause and attack
Israel

Moscow Diplomacy `> Soviet Intervention=> This technology will convince the USSR to join the
Soviet support war against Israel!

Arab embargo -> Oil Shock=> The rise in prices will give you tremendous amounts of cash.

GENTLEMANS RULES

In order to make the scenario work, the player must obey the following rules:

- Do not buy in the international market if you dont have the cash. If your money runs to zero,
technically, you can still purchase units with your "Purchaser", but it will be unfair, because
you will not be paying for them.

- Do not incite revolts. OK! The Mossad unit rocks and you will be able to buy Egypt up by
para-shooting a few Mossad units near their cities and buying all of them. But it will ruin
the game, by making it too easy. Use the Mossad for more creative purposes, like sabotage and
espionage.

- If you play as Israel, do not use nuclear weapons, unless Tel Aviv, Jerusalem or Haifa are
conquered. Israel has a few nuclear units in stockpile, near Dimona. It cant build more, but
it would be catastrofic for Israels image to activate the nuclear option. In the history, Golda
Meir, Israels prime minister, ordered the bombs to be prepared but said they would only be used
in case of absolute emergency.

TITLE

You will agree with me. The Title.gif sucks. What happened is that I simply cant put anything
better as a Title.gif. I have a lot of nice pictures of Aircraft and Desert fighting, but, when
I named them Title.gif and ran the game, the colors got all blurred and I lost my patience trying
to find out what it was. So, if someone knows what is happening, please contact me.

THE PLAYERS
-----------

October 8th, 1973. It is the holyest day for jews and
the hole of the nation of Israel preys in Sinagogue. The
frontier is calm, except for some occasional fighting
between the IDF and the arabs.
The last major war was six years ago and in it, the
Six Days War, the Israel Defense Forces inflicted a crippling
defeat upon the arabs. Israel had conquered all of the West Bank,
the Golan Hights and the big Sinai desert from its enemies.
Everyone thought that, with such a defeat, the Arabs would never try to go
to war again. Would they?

Here is a short description of the players of the scenario (Note: It is only recommended to
play as the israelis or united arab republic):

-AMERICANS: America in 1973 was one of the worlds two superpowers. In a dificult time, when
inflation rose and President Nixon was beeing impeached, America strove to counterbalance the
Soviet challenge in the middle east. America is Israels most relyable ally and, if Israel is
pressed too hard, the USA will give the jewish state valuable assistence.

In the game: The americans occupy the island of Cyprus, something that is not historically
accurate. They will stay in the game, neutral, untill the israelis convince them to come to
their assistence. When this happens, the americans will simbolically disapear and a great
amount of weapons will be given to Israel every turn.

-ISRAELIS: On the Yom Kipur War, Israel was only 25 years old. Despite the imaturity of the small
nation, Israel had succeded in many ways. It increased its population sixfold in the period (from
600.000 to near 3.000.000), develloped a small, but efficient economy and trained one of the
worlds most effective armies. In 1967, after a series of arab provocations, including terrorist
attacks, the closure of the straits of Tiran to israeli shipping and the mobilization of the
egyptian army on the israeli borders, Israel launched the six days war. It was one of the greatest
military successes in history. In six days, the Israel Defense Force (IDF) managed to defeat three
arab armies and triple the size of the country. After this war, all israelis thought there would
be no more fighting, because the arabs were beaten for good. But history teaches us that, in war,
there are no absolute truths. The arab pride was shaken and no compromise was signed.

Strategy: Those who played my other scenario, "Exodus 1948", will quickly recognize the same
map (of corse! geology doesnt change in twenty years, right?). Besides that, most israeli cities
continue on the same place, but are bigger and the environment around them is more develloped. The
israelis cant move on the fist turn, so, they will inevittably receive the first blow from the
arabs. The main problem will be the Egyptians, on the south, and the Syrians, on the north. These
two will lauch coordinated attacks against Israel. You will quickly notice that your strongest
weapon, the Israel Air Force (IAF) will be uselless against the arabs. How will you win, then?

-PALESTINIANS: When the UN voted for the partition of Palestine, two states where suposed to be
created, one jewish and one Arab, for the arabs of palestine. The jews promptly accepted the
partition, for it would mean that there would be a jewish state at last. The palestinians
rejected partition, claiming that all of Palestine belonged to them. When war broke out (in 1948),
the arabs of palestine where suported by the four neighboring states, but they were defeated by
Israel and the palestinian people remained spread throughout Israel, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.

In the game: The palestinian have no independence. They have just a few offices of they
organization (the PLO, Palestine Liberation Organization) spread around the main capitals.
Their main weapon is terrorism and, unless Israel can destroy all of their offices, they will
pose many difficulties to the jewish state.

-UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC: Shortly after the six days war, the arab governments of Egypt and Syria
signed a military pact which, officially, merged their two countries in the United Arab Republic.
In practice, they remained independent, under egyptian predominance. The United Arab Republic,
together, posessed a population of around 50 million, against Israels 3 milion. Also, the
predominance in soldiers and weapons was enormous. This was because, for many years, the Soviet
Union had been suplying the arabs with the latest weapons, including highly efficient anti-aircraft
missiles. These proved deadly on the October (Yom Kipur) War. After the egyptian crossed the Suez
canal, they placed missile batteries on the israeli side, so they could counter any attack from the
air.

Strategy: By playing with the United Arab Republic, you will control both Egypt and Syria. In
the south, your egyptian armies will be along the western margin of the canal. You must take the
occasion, before the arrival of israeli reinforcements, to cross the canal, destroy the
fortificatons on the israeli side, and place fixed anti-aircraft batteries there. This will be
done automatically, through Events, if you manage to destroy the fortifications. After the
crossing, consolidate your position against Israels counter attacks and move in to capture the
rest of Sinai and invade Israel proper. In the north, destroy the israelis Golan defenses,
ocupy the hole of this mountain range and move down ,to destroy the cities on Israels fertile
valley. After this is done, you can attack Israels main cities in the center and ripe the
jewish state off the Earth

-LEBANESE: Lebanon is a small nation just north of Israel. It starts the war neutral, but this
can change acording to the diplomatic environment. Labanon is also the main base for palestinian
terrorists which attack Israel.

In the game: Lebanon is a good choice if you want to keep neutral and see the computer play
against itself. Otherwise, theres not much about it.

-USSR: The Soviet Union is the second of the worlds superpowers. It is profoundly involved in
the prestige struggle with the USA for domination of the region. The USSR supplies most of the
arab weapons, while the US supplies weapons to Israel. In 1967, when Israel won, the Soviet Union
was deeply embarassed by the failure of their weapons in battle. Now, it embarked again on a
massive campaign of military aid to the United Arab Republic, shipping to Egypt loads of heavy
weapons, especially anti-aircraft material.

In the game: In a proportional map, the USSR would not appear, but, in the game map, the USSR
is located in the tip northeast. It is initially at ceasefire with Israel, but this may change.
And the USSR has nuclear weapons.

-JORDANIANS: The little Hashemite Kindom has little to gain from this war. But since the hole
of the arab world is united in this crusade against Zionism, there is a great pressure for
Jordan to get involved too. The Jordanians are ruled by King Hussein, who is a wize and
cautious monarc. At first, he is deeply averted to war, which he knows is folly. He sympatises
with Israel and knows that the arab hatred of the jews is the product of some extremists
nationalism. But, if the pressure amounts too much, he will be forced to enter the war.

In the game: In history, Jordan stayed out of the war, but, in the game, it is possible to
bring her by clever diplomatic action of the United Arab Republic.

THE UNITS
---------

When you start playing this scenario, youll notice that many things have changed about
the units. The most important of them being that all air and sea units had their
movement ranges dramatically increased. The B-2 bomber, for example, can fly
two 25 squares sorties. this means that this unit can virtually cross the map ,without
refuelling, in two turns. The Navys gunboat sails 14 squares per turn. This was decided in
order to make the game more accurate. It would be unthinkable that an airplane cant fly
some 500 miles without refueling. I have tested this feature, too, and it turned out that
it gets quite fun to deal with long range aircraft.

Besides that, roads have a movement rate of five, not just three, and many land units have a
movement alowance of 3 or 4.

These chances are intended to make the scenario more historically acurate, since the area we
are covering is very small (the land of Israel) and it usually took just a few hours to get
from one place to the next.

Also, I wanted to make city walls have a more modest role in the game. So, all tank and
artillery units ignore city walls. This is to make the game more interesting and acurate,

UNIT STATISTICS (FOR NEW UNITS ONLY)

ISRAELIS
Engineer: Atk 2 Def 2 Mov 2 Hit 2 FP 2

General Sharon: Atk 14 Def 8 Mov 5 Hit 3 FP 3 (It is the strongest unit in the game. In the worst
days of fighting, General Ariel Sharon of the tank brigade assembled some of the best armored units
in the IDF and launched an attack that ultimately allowed the israelis to cross back the canal
and encircle the arabs. It will show up once, through events).

IDF Infantry: Atk 6 Def 5 Mov 3 Hit 2 FP 1 (Considered by some the best, most creative and
dedicated infantry in the world. It is the main unit in the IDF. Can make paradrops)

Golani: Atk 6 Def 6 Mov 2 Hit 2 FP 1 (Special mountain troops, well suited to fight
on the Golan Hights, Ign ZOC and alpine)

Special Thanks
--------------

I certainly could never build this scenario alone. In order to finish this job, I was helped
in many ways by other civ fans, without whom the work wouldnt be done.

Also, most of the graffic images that Im using were downloaded from the net. I wont be able
to credit all graffic creators, because I dont have all their names, but my thanks to the
guys who created the Allicons.gif, Allcities.gif and allflags.gif files, Harlan Thompson,
Michael D. McCart and Michael D. Raney. These are magnificent compilations.

Finally, I would like no tell the players that Ive assembled a very large library of CIV II
files, including about 1200 graffic icons (some repetitions, inevitably), 62 sound files and
loads of programs and txt files with tips for scenario creation. If anyone whishes to get these
files, simply send me an E-mail describing what you want and Ill be happy to search something
for you.

Thats all folks, I hope you will enjoy my scenario as much as I enjoyed building it. This
is my second scenario ( the first one is ("Exodus 1948") and Im thinking about building others
on the Arab-israeli wars. I would really apreciate if you send me any comments that you have.
Anyone at all. This would be much usefull to improve the quality of my future scenarios.
